Question : The doctor says my daughter has an imperforate hymen . What does this mean ?
Answer : The hymen , or maidenhead , is a thin film of tissue which separate the vagina from the outside world . Usually there is a gap in it so that menstrual blood can escape , and this gap is made wider at the time of first sexual intercourse . An imperforate hymen has no opening at all , and therefore no way for menstrual blood to escape from the body .
In case like that of your daughter it is necessary to open the hymen by a small operation . When the hymen heals it then has a gap in it which will allow her to have normal periods in future .
