Question : I bled quite heavily when I first had sexual intercourse . What caused it and what should I have done about it ?
Answer : A small blood loss on first intercourse is quite common and is associated with a torn hymen. This is the flap of skin across the entrance to the vagina and the blood comes from little blood vessels, or capillaries , which are in the actual tissue of the hymen . The best way to treat such bleeding is to apply firm pressure , either by sitting on your first or an ice pack even though the area may be tender . If the bleeding continue it may be necessary to go to the casualty department of your local hospital .
